There are two ways to use the TinyHardwareFirewall (THF), it has one Ethernet port and one WiFi radio.
Scenario 1. Internet Source: Wireless Access Point
This is the default mode. In this mode your computer plugs into the THFW via a wired Ethernet port and the THFW connects to the Internet via a wireless access point. You can use the THFW just as a firewall or you can use it as a firewall and vpn client. In this mode you can also plug the Ethernet cable into a hub or switch and plug up to four computers into the switch. All four would be protected by the THFW and all four would pass all data through the VPN tunnel if the vpn is activated. In this mode for maximum security it is recommended that you turn off your laptop’s wifi radio.
The Wireless Access Point Scenario
Connect your laptop via an Ethernet cable (supplied) to the HvpnPHFW. Connect the USB cable or plug it into a wall. Log into the self contained secure web interface and choose an access point (the strongest open access point is automaticly pre-selected) and click connect. If you wish you can also connect to the VPN.
Also:
If you wish to protect more than one device you can plug the HsvpnPHFW into a switch or hub. You can now protect up to four wired devices.
Scenario 2. Internet Source: Wired Ethernet Connection to Internet
In this mode the THFW connects to the Internet via an Ethernet cable and acts as a very secure Access Point Firewall with a built in VPN client. Any four WPA2 compatible WiFi devices can connect to the access point. If the VPN tunnel is activated all traffic from all connected devices will go through the tunnel.
The Wired Internet Access Scenario
If you have a wired connection you can reconfigure the HvpnPHFW into a WPA access point with one click. It will generate an random access point name and WPA passcode. If you don't like the name and pass code click a button and it will create another. Now reboot the HsvpnPHFW and connect the Ethernet cable to a wired Internet connection. The HsvpnPHFW will now act as a a WPA encrypted access point for up to four wireless devices. So far this is the only way to get a non-jailbroken ipad, iphone, android or other smart phone into a 256bit openvpn tunnel.
